FAQ: your questions answered
Website security
How can I be sure that my phone databases are safe?
We are well aware that the safety and security of contact databases is very important to our clients. And we understand that successful and long-term cooperation with customers is only possible if we take all precautions against theft and unauthorised access to databases.
The measures we have taken are described in our Security Policy. In addition, we may take additional measures to ensure data security.
Questions on working with the SMS service
Does the Octotoo service allows to send personalised campaigns?
Of course. You can insert individual data for each subscriber into the message, such as a discount offer, date and time (often used to remind of an upcoming meeting), etc. The most common example of SMS personalisation is addressing each subscriber with a first name.
To do this, you need to upload a CSV file that contains a column with subscribers’ names in addition to a column with phone numbers. And in the text of the message, instead of the name, you need to put a special code #abonent_name#, and the system will pull the name from the file in its place.
Why do I add 1000 numbers to a group but get only 983 instead?
As you add numbers to a group, duplicate numbers are removed. As a result, only one unique number remains (even if it was repeated 23 times in the list). This way you are sure that you won’t send the same SMS to the same subscriber more than once.
What is the speed of SMS sending?
The Octotoo service allows sending messages at a speed of 30-100 SMS per second. It means that all customers receive SMS quickly and on time.
I send one text message, but the service shows that there are two. What's wrong?
The number of characters in SMS messages is the same for all operators:
Number of segments – Latin (ASCII) – Cyrillic
1 – 160 – 70
2 – 306 – 134
3 – 459 – 201
4 – 612 – 268
Each SMS message can contain up to 160 letters in Latin (or, more precisely, ASCII – English alphabet). You can send a text of up to 612 Latin characters and up to 268 Cyrillic characters at a time. SMS consisting of several segments are ‘glued’ together, and the recipient can see it as one long message.
Due to the “gluing”, the limit of the total number of characters in multi-segment messages is not a multiple of 160 or 70. Charging is based on the number of segments in the message. Each segment is charged as a separate SMS. It’s important to note that some older phone models can only receive stacked messages of up to 3 segments.
The number of phones without any support for splicing is gradually approaching zero.
If at least one atypical character appears in a message, it will be treated by the system as not complying with ASCII, and then the length of one message will immediately drop to 70 characters with spaces.
How to send an SMS campaign using Octotoo?
To launch an SMS campaign, you need to log in to the website (enter your username and password). If you are not registered, you need to register. After registration, a minimum budget for testing the service appears on your balance automatically.
Until the manager contacts you, your account is in test mode, and some SMS may not be delivered (due to restrictions and spam protection). After the call from our manager, your account will be transferred to the user status. You are provided with a universal Alpha Name (the name that is displayed on the recipient’s phone) to test single messages.
To send a mass campaign, you need to apply for a personal Alpha Name or register a universal one. Also, prepare a list of recipients in advance. Go to the “Create a campaign” section in your personal account.
To send single SMS, you need to enter the sender’s name (Alpha name), which consists of Latin letters and numbers ( up to 11), the recipient’s phone number, and the message text. Click the ‘Send’ button and that’s it!
Where can I check the reports to see who received my message and who didn't?
To find the list of recipients who received the message and those who didn’t, go to the Reports page. Find your campaign in the table and click on the button with the magnifying glass in the Actions column. You will be taken to the detailed campaign report page, where you can see the statuses of all your SMS messages.
Is it possible to send an SMS campaign to my own database of recipients?
Yes, of course. To upload a list of numbers, go to the “Number Databases” section in your personal account and click the green “Add database” button.
May I send SMS automatically from my website/billing/1C, etc.?
Yes. To do this, you can download connection examples on the Service Connection page. But do not forget to register beforehand. The website offers connections via SMPP/HTTP/XML.
You can also get a test SMPP connection upon request.
What is an Alpha name?
This is the name of the sender from whom your SMS is sent to the recipient. For example, ‘Octotoo’.
How can I register an Alpha name and what do I need for this?
Only legal entities can register their own Alpha name. If you don’t have your own Alpha name, you can always use free generic Alpha names, which are available without restrictions.
To register a personal Alpha name, you need to fill out an application in your personal account:
- Come up with an Alpha name (up to 11 characters in Latin, for example: Octotoo, Octo.com).
- Indicate the form of ownership (sole proprietorship/sole proprietorship) and your TIN/EDRPOU.
- Select your purpose of informing from the list (does not affect the operators’ decision).
- Briefly describe your services (for example, a beauty salon, an online hardware store).
- Provide a link to your website or social media.
What is the registration period for an Alpha name?
The registration period depends on mobile operators. It can take up to 14 business days to verify an Alpha name.
What is the Blacklist?
The blacklist contains numbers of subscribers who don’t want to receive SMS messages. To avoid editing the group (the full list of recipients): searching for a number, deleting it, uploading it again, etc. You simply add a number to the blacklist, and no SMS will be sent to it.
Can you help me launch an SMS campaign?
If you haven’t had any experience with mass messaging before, and you’d like to make your campaign as effective as possible, our experts will be able to help. Contact your manager with this question (their contacts are listed in your personal account).
If you have any technical questions, please contact technical support. It works around the clock.
What is the Operator Campaign?
Operator Campaigns allow you to send mass messages to your target group. For example, in a certain city or area of interest. Otherwise, it is a targeted mass SMS campaign using our databases.
How to improve the customer base?
To exclude numbers that do not receive SMS, after completing one of your campaigns, open the detailed report on it and select the numbers that have the status “Rejected” or “Undeliverable”. Remove the found numbers from the group.
How long can it take to deliver an SMS?
If the SMS lifespan is not forced on the website, the maximum value is set. However, it is different for each operator, as the table shows:
Operator | Message lifespan, by default |
---|---|
Life:), Astelit | 24 hours |
Kyivstar | 72 hours |
Vodafone | 72 hours |
Utel | 72 hours |
PeopleNET | 72 hours |
